[AlpacaTalk] hides/fiber
<<I agree, when I had to put a cria down last year I actually felt
horribly guilty that I WASN'T taking his skin--it felt like I was
wasting what little he had left to offer to the world :( But I'm a
vegetarian, and even when I wasn't, I gagged at just skinning
supermarket chicken breast, and though my bf has no problem skinning
things, he loved the little guy too and was hesitant, plus we
couldn't find anyone to tan it anyway...And I was crying too hard to
even shear him... What a sap...
I've gotten slightly more practiucal since. We had to shoot a bobcat
that was IN MY BARN!!! the other night. My bf and a friend did skin
that and now it's (ugh!) in my freezer until we find a tannery.
Still, the emotional connection isn't there...
Peace,
Morgen

I'm with you Morgen - another vegetarian - Yippee! I cannot imaging
skinning anything, especially something so dearly beloved. However, I
do understand the practicalities of it, tho I don't know what a hide is
used for.
When I had a yearling (solid black - a real beauty) drop dead for no
apparent reason a couple of years ago - he seemed perfectly fine until I
found him dead in the pasture one evening, sob sob........I asked my dog
groomer if she would come over and shear him. I felt like a twisted
human being for even wanting to do such a thing and I have never spoken
a word of what I did; so I am appreciating hearing that others that love
thier pacas like family members have done the same thing. But I wanted
his fleece. I couldn't be there when she did it, couldn't bear it. She
came early the next morning before burial. I left the baby in the
pasture that night for mama to grieve and process. And grieve she did.
It was simply heartbreaking. After my friend sheared the little one
she called me out. He was nothing but skin and bones?? We were
shocked. He was still nursing; he was grazing, but not eating
grain....I wan't offering it since he was still nursing - he was about
8/9 mos old. I have no idea why he would be so incredibly
skinny.....and I wasn't on this list then so had no one to ask. I was
*really* angry with my vet as he was giving the dectomax shot monthly
and therefore had his hands on this baby every single month. HE should
have noticed. *I* should have noticed, but I was not handling the baby
as he was a male and I had been told to be very very careful about not
handling or bonding with the babies, esp the males. Today I know I was
TOO hands off :-(.
Warmly, Janice
