[AlpacaTalk] Re:More on show fees

HI Heather:

It's interesting to see a different perspective about the stalling. I wasn't surprised at the cost of stalling at Nationals. East Coast stalling and shows I think is generally much more expensive than west coast. The cost for stalling at nationals puts it at the higher end of stalling for the East Coast. We spend on average $200 on stalls out here. It's always great when a show comes in with a lower rate. Virginia had a lower rate of $75 a stall, but they were in a horse barn not in the venue itself. The Empire, Mapaca, Sepa, Paoba, NJ, Maba, and I believe the new england states all have high fees - within the 150-250 a stall. Venues here (except for the summer months) have to be inside, which costs for the facility, stalls, and from what I understand the worst cost now is bedding. Sod has gotten so expensive that some places have had to switch to straw or cardboard bedding. Mapaca publishes what they spend on sod and panels, and it's astronomical. And I
think that Nationals are somewhat larger than Mapaca.

I so wish there could be a cheaper system, I too think more people would come. It costs a lot of money for the farms to do shows now, between transporting (yes gas has dropped - but for how long). hotel expenses, food, stalling and registration.

I find myself doing a lot more mail in fleece shows this year then I used to, because of the cost. Is your show doing Mail in? you probably could get a bit more revenue from that.

Also - just a thought for your show - we have 2 summer shows out here in NY which are considerably cheaper - and much more fun then the big shows. they are both in July - and it's only shorn competitions and fleece. And everyone ends up doing performance classes, and it's a lot of fun. the breeders have a great time, and it's really good for new breeders - and old breeders too! stalling is inexpensive because it's outside under tents, and they keep the registration inexpensive too. There is one in NJ called Bare Naked. in May or June.  You might want to consider doing that for your show.
