Re: [AlpacaTalk] Let them eat cake.

Let me bring up horse shows one more time...its relative. As a person coming
from horses to alpacas - shows are a breath of fresh air.

At a horse show, stalls are $150 per weekend. This does not include bedding.
One horse per stall! Babies included! So if you want to bring three babies,
you are looking at $450. Then you pay a "per judge fee" of $25 - so if there
are two judges - add in $50 per horse. Now you pay $85 PER CLASS PER HORSE.
So if you take each one in 3 classes (which is typical for the title) you can
just keep adding. Add in your day rate (to help the organizers) of $75 total
for the weekend. And $75 to park your horse trailer on the grounds. To show
three younsters you are looking at a very quick $1500 per weekend! To show
three babies!

This does not include the ads/sponsorships and annual dues run $100-250
depending on the organization.

In order to go to the world or the national shows, you have to qualify. This
means each show is worth a certain number of points for each ribbon. So you
would have to get a blue at a minimum of 5 alpaca level 4 shows. Its not
likely that you would win them all, or that they would all be a level 4. On
average, we attend 8-10 shows and hope to win enough to qualify for the world - so
you figure in one season you are talking atleast $12,000! (or $4,000 per
horse). If you qualify for the world - just think of the math - we are talking
6-10 judges, classes at $125 each time your horse steps in the ring! Ads are
triple the price!

Lets talk wardrobe! Saddles $10,000 to be competitive. A simple show halter
can run $800. Attire for the handler often runs $1500-3500! And its a huge
faux paux to wear the same outfit at each show! Its crazy!

And with horses you have to show to sell for decent money. You have to
campaign your stallions at the shows. Its so competitive selling....imagine how it
must be for the people that CANT afford to show. Think of what they feel is
happening to the market!

I thought alpaca showing was pretty cheap comparing it out! And to not have
to braid or bathe my horses in the morning of EACH DAY of the show! Was just
the icing on the cake!
