[AlpacaTalk] feeding grains
Heather, I remember early this year there was a discussion about this
and you said you don't feed any grain at all, only alfalfa. I thought
that would be great as this alpaca formula is so expensive and the price
goes up literally every single month this year. I was excited to think
I could stop spending that money....not to mention the gas and the time
to drive to the next town over to pick it up. I got alfalfa cubes.
Firts the guy at the feed store scared me to death about feeding it, but
I went ahead. But then they all, except one, turned their noses up at
it. I kept giving it to them for probably close to 2 wks before I broke
down and went and got them some more feed.
But I am curious about the comment you made recently about PEM being
triggered or caused by a thiamine def and that's one of many reasons why
you give no grain? Grains in general are a great source of thiamine. I
am thinking you are thinking about the phytates in grain and that that
binds up the thiamine?
Warmly, Janice
