Isn't that the truth! After giving up on my male last Jan saying he had no
idea what the problem was and my boy was clearly in pain and distress and
suffering, everything the vet did just seemed to cause him more pain and stress; my
handsome man died during the night. I called the vet to come do an autopsy
that morning. We waited. My dd wants to be a vet so she wanted to watch. We
never heard him come. I looked out at one point and my heart stopped as my
handsome sweet Charlie Brown was lying in a different position. My heart leapt
as I thought for a brief second that perhaps I had been mistaken and he wasn't
dead after all. Closer inspection revealed the vet had come, turned him over
so his belly was facing the house/driveway, cut him open and then left him
there with his guts lying out all over the place. It makes me cry just
remembering my disbelief. He didn't bother to talk to me or even to be decent enough
to turn my boy around so we wouldn't be faced with his guts cut open every
time we walked out. I had to call him to ask! Intestinal strangulation was all
he said and a shrug when I asked what could have caused this: "it just happens
sometimes". Then the very next day I got a huge bill.
I have never called him again. He is the one with the bitchy wife that is
now answering all his calls. I was getting my horse hay from him but when I
called earlier this summer and she answered the phone and was hateful to me - she
believes I owe them $1000 tho I wrote her a detailed letter of all the
charges and the fact that I pay Doc cash each and every time he comes out here, she
responded by threatening to turn me over to a collection agency - I now get my
hay elsewhere and have dealt with all my various animal emergencies on my own
since. It has been a real hardship, but then I think about how he treated my
Man and it makes me sick.....his cavelier attitude. He didn't use to be like
this.

To make this story even worse I could find noone to bury him. He laid out
there for a full 10 days before I could get someone over here. Noone around
here with the machinery, finally got a college boy who dug for 2 days to dig a
big enough hole. Thank goodness it was dead winter. But everytime we walked
out or drove down the driveway there was my Charlie Brown. I finally covered
him with a blanket to keep the birds from discovering him :-(.

<<I feel for you and your troubles. Do you have a farm close by that
you can make a deal for some breedings to one of their "proven"
(meaning healthy) males?>>

Nope, I'm the only I know around here with alpacas. There's quite a few
folks with llamas but I can't figure out who they use for a vet and according to
the local feed stores they are feeding horse sweet feed so I wouldn't be going
to them for help! I drive an hour to get my alpaca feed and special order it
as I am the only one that purchases it. But I am counting on my young male
who is just now starting to mate with one of the females :-).

Thanks for your suggestions and good luck with the discussion with your old
vet, Vanessa.
