I had long planned to move some of my alpacas over to the horse pasture as it
is big and I only have 3 horses. The alpacas *were* getting crowded :-(.
Now I only have the 4 left so currently it is not a problem. But when I was
considering it I just never got around to doing it and wondered and worried how
they would get along. This summer with the drought there has been no hay to
speak off and I started letting both the horses and alpacas out in the yard to
graze in the evenings (great solution as my mower was on the fritz and I
coulnd't mow anyway). They all seemed to keep to themselves. One day an alpaca got
to close to the horse for her liking and she kicked. Luckily didn't strike
the paca but I saw instantly what a bad idea it would be to pasture them
together.
That said the first alpaca farm I visited had alpacas running with horses and
didn't seem to have a care in the world. They had a lot of pacas and quite a
few horses as well. They also had a much much much bigger pasture area with
rolling hills, woods, etc. So plenty of space. My horse pasture is
large.....it is also almost totally dirt (drought) and they all hang at the shed where
the hay is so I know they would all be up in each other's faces for the hay.
I don't know anything about the health aspects.....
referring to the wife was a vet so I have to assume they knew what they were
doing.......
would all depend on the area and the layout.
I too would be worried about a horse kicking an alpaca, but I suppose you
would know your horses well enough to know if you have a kicker.
