Thanks for this info Laurel. I have never heard of this and have read Dr
Evans manual backwards and forwards so many times but do not recall seeing
anything about this. But then ususally when I am reading it is because I am looking
for somethign specific and have to filter thru his whole book to find it. (I
wish someone would convince him to put an index in his book....it is SO hard
to find the info you need when you need it.)
I will definitely mention this to the new vet. Right now I am gathering info
and trying to get it all straight in my mind before I contact him so I will
know exactly what I am requesting.
Sounds devastating.
Do most of you keep penicillan and similar meds on hand? If so, how do you
obtain them? The vets that I have worked with do not want to let go of that
income to help you become more self sufficient. I can't even get my vet to
write a thyroid prescription for my dog so I can fill it on line - SO much
cheaper. Incredibly frustrating.
I have spoken with Dr Evans several times over the years as well as his wife.
I have their old number but did not know they had moved so wouldn't know how
to get in touch with him now.
So Alpaca fever would show up as a positive for Strep? What would that be -
a swab cultured? A blood test? Do they have symptoms? Mine have never
appeared sick at all.
I have long suspected repeated abortions as I would see them out there all
the time mating; I would note it on my calendar - but no cria would be born a
year later. In 5 years alone together my original pair only managed to produce
2 babies - one of whom died at about 8 mos; the other one born with severe
problems is now 3 yrs old and has done great.
Thanks, Janice
