[AlpacaTalk] crias and colustrum
hi - Janice how horrible for you to try so hard to save the baby and lose him too - plus the mom and dad - The sire of our new boy died last week (belongs to a friend) and i thought i was going to watch this little one fade away too - he was so weak. I was in such a panic.
I was frantically trying to reach a large-animal vet (none here in the valley) and the only one i could reach was hours away down island - and busy - no help there - There are no other alpaca farms here either so i phoned a man i knew had a llama farm, I'd never met him before but i explained the situation and he and his wife came over with frozen llama colostrum, and that worked like a charm. I am so grateful. I had previously ordered "immu start colostrum" (bovine) and "alpaca milk replacer" from Bickerson's Farm Supply (www.bickersonsfarm
But my alpaca health care management book says to use goat colostrum, so you were doing the right thing, even though the little one didn't survive - You did your best and that's all any of us can do. I've heard from two other alpaca farmers lately about deaths in their herds - heart failure seems to be the cause of a lot of them.
And to all you who have had BOYS, yes, me too!!!! I have two lovely boys, and one more cria due any day - this has to be my girl - i still have two boys from last year's crop, that somehow have become part of the family - plus my two studs i use for breeding - the boys keep coming and i need girls!!!!
And thanks to everyone for the kind wishes for my new baby. I hope the next birth is uneventful (please), I don't need any more gray hairs.
