Re: [AlpacaTalk] what can you do to help
To my knowledge, it was Peter who started the talks
with Pendleton. If AFCNA took over, that is another
story, but maybe I am wrong about the info I heard...
AFCNA has all that fiber in storage because they are
still "looking for product uses" for that fleece. It
says it on the website. It has been sitting for years.
If people want to send their fiber to AFCNA, I think
they should. We would rather use it ourselves and make
some real money at it. I don't want to debate what
AFCNA is or isnt doing, but it obviously does not
agree with many people or else there would be more
fiber sent to them.
We all should get more involved with what happens to
our fleece. That is why I think that the insulation
aspect is a good one. For those people who are not
interested in selling products at shows, online or in
their farm stores, they could still sell the fleece
for a good profit and have it be sold for home
insulation. Pick up a Natural Home magazine and look
in the back. There is all sorts of things to buy for
home building. There are even eco-friendly home stores
now. I thought of that idea 10 years ago and never did
anything about it....sigh. I would volunteer to get
the ball rolling, but I don't have enough 2nds and
3rds myself, and I plan to use all mine for rugs.
There is room for everyone to take a part in all
aspects of this industry.
As for fiber sorting, there are people who are taking
the classes at Olds College. My mom is (hopefully I
will too) and many people in the SOJAA affiliate will
take it after AlpacaMania in Southern Oregon in
October. Ruth Elvestad will be giving the course for 3
days after the show. Other parts of the country can do
this too, if they take the initiative and contact Ruth
about her coming to their show.
Go for it!
