Re: [Alpacasite] Re: bedliners
We have transported small llamas twice in the back seat of our club cab pick up truck.
The seat folds up, and the llama stood or kushed on the floor.

You should be able to train your alpaca to ride in the
back of a hatchback car! I started transporting my
llamas in the back of a regular-size pickup with a
tall camper top. Initially, I used a ramp. The
llamas disliked the ramp, so they jumped in instead.
I graduated to a big 4WD PU that was taller--the
llamas just jumped higher. They learn to duck their
heads at the same time after the first time they whack
it on the entry.
Now I use a full-size 15-passenger economy van and
have carried as many as 5 llamas and show gear at a
time (really too much, but it is possible). My
alpacas are fine with it, they just leap right in with
their llama buddies. I've seen an adult llama crawl
into the back of a Chevy Blazer. The book "Llamas are
the Ultimate" tells about how an outdoorsman trained
his pack llamas to crawl into a Cessna airplane so he
could transport them into the wilderness.
The bottom line: llamas and alpacas can ride wherever
they can fit, and they can fit into amazingly small
places (and crowding is OK, too, if you're only
transporting for a few hours). Also, they can jump
into startlingly high truck/van beds. These animals
will meet your expectations, so have high
expectations!
To start out, it is easiest if you back your truck up
to a slope so there is only a small step up. However,
once your animals figure out that the truck takes them
home, they will load relatively easily from level
ground when off the farm. And they love looking out
the windows!
For fun, in case you haven't seen it, I've attached a
photo taken in NYC 1957.
