Re: [Alpacasite] Question about the use of Concrete
Some parts of our barn are concrete, and some of the outbuildings are dirt.
Both have advantages. Our main barn, that we clean with a skid steer is
concrete, and it's a godsend to be able to just hoe it out with the big
machine. It's also VERY cool in the summer and the llamas love to retreat
into the cool when the bugs are too bad. In the winter we deep bed with
manure and straw layers so it's soft and warm and relatively clean with the
addition of fresh straw. I think of concrete as the "cadillac" of flooring
for a barn. There are two things to think about though, you don't want to
be scooping up all the bedding and poop each day in winter as they would be
left on bare concrete and it could aggravate or even start arthritis in
their legs. The outbuildings that are dirt or wood are ok too, but the
concrete sure is easier to clean out. You also don't end up with holes from
trying to clean out the wet areas. One thing, if you are doing fresh
concrete, make SURE to have the surface textured. If it's left smooth, it's
deadly slippery when wet! regards, ellen b prosser Yenneveldt Farm Llamas
