Re: [Alpacasite] Re: Question about the use of Concrete

I had concrete flooring poured for my new barn, and love it -- especially for clean-up. However, be sure to use rough-finished concrete unless you plan to cover it with mats or spray-on rubber, and be certain there is good drainage. Wet concrete is very slippery! It is also cold in the wintertime, so you'll want to use some sort of bedding over it, and perhaps also use a radiant heater, heated piglet pad, or heat lamp to provide a space (or spaces) for elderly or very young alpacas. We use deep bedding in the wintertime, so a cushion is built up very quickly that provides both good footing and warmth. In the summer, after clean-up I sprinkle wood chips, pine cat litter or bird grit (for my guineas) wherever it's wet and that seems to give them sufficient traction. Frankly, I'd rather have my alps use the barn for the potty than the pasture; it's much easier to rake up and remove beans from the concrete floor than to pick them out of the grass! :-)
