Re: [Alpacasite] Question Regarding Eataholic Cria

Hello!

We, too, had a "precocious" eater two months ago. He was trying the hay within days and wanted grain very shortly thereafter. He was nursing on mama, too, and grazing very nicely in the paddock. We took him out into a separate run (next to mama's pen) at grain feeding time and gave him just a little, mixed with calf manna. We did ask the vet first! As he grew and put on weight, we gave him more. Now he eats his grain ration and runs back in to mom to nurse. He is a piglet but he's gaining weight steadily and uniformly (about the same amount each day) and the beans are normal. He exhibits no sign of intestinal stress, so we let him eat his grain. Do keep an eye on the weight and the beans, but if he wants the hay and grass I'd let him go at it for a limited time while you are watching (if your vet says OK!)

Subject: [Alpacasite] Question Regarding Eataholic Cria

Hi:

We have a youngster that is approximately 30 hours old, and is already
digging in to mom's hay manger (they are in the barn for the night)
and is looking to nurse almost every 20 minutes (mom has very good
milk). He just seems to be an aggressive eater, but is it OK for him
to get hay and grass at this young an age? I wasn't sure if his
stomach could handle the roughage, I've never had one start picking
this early (usually it is a week..maybe?). thanks in advance.
