Re: [Alpacasite] Re: Getting More People into the Alpaca Industry
Linda,
I could not concur more that some folks own animals that should not... BUT
your post struck me viciously.. Because EACH of your points about the
offensive' farm could have fit me to a T... "I heard about a farm that is...
SHOULD NOT be included in ANY post.... Not unless you KNOW these people,
their circumstances and what they are individually dealing with!
"when I sold my horses"... Good job in my opinion... I spent days naw...
WEEKS of my time inter-viewing folks who were interested in my dober pups...
And turned down more than a few as in-appropriate for this particular breed.
One MUST care for the future of that animal that you have helped to create.
HOWEVER.. We must ALSO keep an open mind as to other's situations.
For instance.... "I just heard of a farm who has a lot of Acreage, but yet
they keep their alpacas in a very very small area and Then they only feed
once a day and they are not given free choice of
Hay."
I have 30 acres... My 5 alpacas are on just over 2 of that... BECAUSE.. The
rest has been too recently habituated by cows and is NOT safe from coyotes
and stray dogs and the 2+ acres I have them on ARE safe from those things...
With yet plenty of pasture for their needs AT THIS POINT!
I feed once a day... This is what works for my farm... My animals are
HEALTHY... My vets are HAPPY and so am I.. Who the heck are you to say that
MY situation and MY farm REQUIRE more or less????... My point is that in
YOUR situation and YOUR conditions that may very well BE a requirement or
need... It isn't on MY farm.
"not given free choice of hay"... Neither do I....now on the lactating and
juveniles.. Yes.. They get all and more they could ask for... But not on the
boys side who are over weight piglets.... Those I am careful to limit what
they get in hay.
NOW...having said all that on my soap box... I have to give credit for the
things that you DO know for sure... If there is a habit of eating fiber off
each other (NOT a particular cria with facination for mom's fleece or a
particular seeming problem) yeah... That would be cause for concern.. But I
have to ask... Would you have even HEARD of this farm if THEY were not
asking others for help with their problems?
The whole point is.. Please do not ASSUME that the situations of others
applies to what YOU know at YOUR farm....

I agree that there are too many people getting into the industry that
have no business owning a dog or cat, let alone an alpaca. There are
those people who are in this business ONLY for the money and they do
not care who they sell to. When I sold my horses, I would visit the
peoples ranch before I would let them buy. I would not allow my horses
to go to places that had barbed wire, no shelter, etc. I really would
love for the whole alpaca industry to do the same. The industry is
growing so fast and so many people are just not being educated on the
care and responsibilities!! I just heard of a farm who has a lot of
acreage, but yet they keep their alpacas in a very very small area and
then they only feed once a day and they are not given free choice of
hay. I was told these animals are eating fiber off of each other!!
There is just too much of this going on and it sickens me.
Just had to say my peace on this subject. It is one that gets me
going, LOL!!!
