RE: [AlpacaTalk] Blowing out the fiber before shearing
We just use our shop vac, using the BLOW option, rather than
suck.....lol. There are much more powerful machines, called circuiteers,
but much more expensive.
It is usually a two person job, with one holding the animal and one
holding the wand.
It will blow the dry matter but not the stuff that is really stuck
on those cria coats.
I have several bags of cria fleece that I will skirt and then card
by hand to get all the crud out. Ideally, crias should be "tipped", which
is cutting the ends of their fleece anywhere from three weeks to a month
after they're born. Of course, I almost always forget it. Especially those
born in the Fall.........it never crosses my mind to trim them when the
weather is getting colder!

What do you use to blow the fiber out with. This sounds like such a good
idea especially with our cria. I have been calling her velcro because
everything is in her fleece. I pick it out nearly every day and use my wand,
but would like to blow it out. We are shearing the end of May and would love
to know how to do it before then.
Thanks for all the great info.
