RE: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca extremely sick
Hi Chrys,
Inject straight Thiamine, the strongest dose you can get---overdose and they just pee it out, so no harm. It is a major support to rumination---and it also gives an appetite. Get some fib-revive or just chop up some alfalfa to go with his regular ration. -- Also do a fecal and see if there has been a stress related parasite bloom.
You have to move fast---vet will have straight thiamine (B12) Not the complex…just straight. Evans manual has the dose range---and you can use a high dose---and give it every few hours Also---how are temperature, respiration and gut sounds?
Put some probios on his pellets---but do NOT give a pound of grain. Would acidify the rumen and might just kill him if suddenly done. If you are just starting pellets---only give like a ¼ cup daily for the first few days. I don’t know if this boy is planning an ulcer, but if your vet has sucralfate, that will help him to avoid a stomach ulcer. Your boy is stressed….and stress can bring on rumen crash or PEM (Polioencephlaomacia) …so you MUST ACT QUICKLY!!!
No abrupt changes in food!!!!
Sounds like your vet is more of a horse vet!
Feel free to call me---I am not a vet, just a paca owner---but have been through this sort of thing. If nothing brewing in the way of a fever---he might need a little Banamine for pain---100 lbs is 1 cc so if this guy is 150 lbs, then 1.5 cc.
Vet should have that too. Put this same request for help over on UAFF (join it!!!, it is a wonderful site) (unitedalpacas@yahoogroups.com) and one of the vets or other well educated in camelid folks will doubtless help you.
Best of luck---you don’t say if he’s cold, but if he’s not moving---put a coat on him, too ---helps conserve strength.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca extremely sick
One of my males got pretty beat up in a fight with my other male. Called the vet out he stated the boy was under weight and he had to have weight put on him. They told me he needed higher protein.
Two days later, this boy will not get up. Called the vet out and he stated that he was probably not going to make it. He stated we had to get him up and moving. I put him in a chute and he will not even try to stand. We kept him strapped up in the chute for an hour and tried to get him to stand. He stood on his own for about 3 minutes.
This morning - He is not showing any signs of eating or even picking his head up. I am about to go put him in the chute again.
The vet said I needed to get him better hay and feed him a pound of grain. He said I needed to get his protein level up.
What are you guys feeding? I have only been in the business 3 years and this is the first year I have had any of these problems. This boy was just seen by the vet for show in April of 2011 and it was never mentioned that he was under weight.
Is anyone else having issues? Can anyone recommend anything? Sorry this is so long, but this boy was the first cria born on my farm and I do not want to lose him. Not that I want to lose any of them.
