Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca extremely sick
Hi Chrys,
I suspect that your male is extremely anemic and needs a transfusion. Getting beaten up is a symptom, not the cause of what is going on.
I have found through the years that the type of fecal done by vets varies tremendously dependent upon when they went to vet school. I am pretty sure your male has one of the following, this is assuming that he has been receiving memingeal worm prevention with either ivermectin, doramectin, or fenbendazole:
Haemonchus contortus (barber pole worm)
Eimeria macusaniensis
Mycoplasma haemolama
or perhaps a pneumonia.
Another possibility is thiamine deficiency or polio encephalomalacia.
Ohio has been incredibly wet and mild this year and that is the perfect scenario for intestinal parasites. If you can load him and go to OSU, that would be best. If not, put a coat on your friend. I notice that you aren't too far from Findlay. Might I recommend that you contact Dr. Pam Walker at Alpaca Jacks. She used to teach part time at OSU until budget cuts took her off the faculty. The only number I have is (419) 423-3890
It is not looking good for this fellow, you need to do something very quickly. A transfusion may be his only hope if he is so anemic that he can't get up.
