Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca extremely sick

Hi chrys,

I'm still not clear as to what the vet actually did...

Did you check for parasites? Is he anemic? Did the vet run a blood panel? What do your other animals look like?

If, in fact your hay is poor, it will have an overall effect on all your animals and you may loose more. I urge you to find a higher quality hay and at this point, I'd try to find some with alfalfa. Forage is good as well as calf manna to add some weight. Unfortunately, if he's not eating, it may be tough to get him eating again; if he goes too long without food and water, things will begin to shut down. You may need to give him some vit B injections as well as make a slurry and tube him.

I'd get your vet back on board.

Good Luck

One of my males got pretty beat up in a fight with my other male. Called the vet out he stated the boy was under weight and he had to have weight put on him. They told me he needed higher protein.

Two days later, this boy will not get up. Called the vet out and he stated that he was probably not going to make it. He stated we had to get him up and moving. I put him in a chute and he will not even try to stand. We kept him strapped up in the chute for an hour and tried to get him to stand. He stood on his own for about 3 minutes.

This morning - He is not showing any signs of eating or even picking his head up. I am about to go put him in the chute again.

The vet said I needed to get him better hay and feed him a pound of grain. He said I needed to get his protein level up.

What are you guys feeding? I have only been in the business 3 years and this is the first year I have had any of these problems. This boy was just seen by the vet for show in April of 2011 and it was never mentioned that he was under weight.

Is anyone else having issues? Can anyone recommend anything? Sorry this is so long, but this boy was the first cria born on my farm and I do not want to lose him. Not that I want to lose any of them.
