RE: [AlpacaTalk] Van riding...
I recently used my mini van to transport our 11 month old alpaca. He was travelling alone, but took it all in stride. I will share the ideas we were given for transporting in a van.
I have a cargo mat on the floor and put doggie wee wee pads on top of it and then the mats with holes in them. They are normally in my dh garage to help with fatigue. They make great mats over pads in the event the hmmmmmr has to potty. Our trip was approx 6 hours and we didn't stop to let him out. My friends told me that every time they stopped the animals didn't do anything, so I decided to skip that. He did not potty at all, but when we got home, he did a
I believe we could transport four small animals, but if larger, I think maybe two dams with crias would be tops.
Our Ivory was so funny. I would look in the rear view mirror and he would have a face full of hay with some sticking out the sides of his mouth. He was an excellent traveler.
If I buy another van in the future, I will get one with the extended ceiling. That would come in handy for transporting the bigger ones.
We have a 16 ft gooseneck trailer and unless I am moving several, I don't expect to use it much. The van was excellent in that I could direct a lot of A/C to the rear and keep him cool.

Hi Carla,
Congrats on your venture in the alpaca world...
I would think the mini van would be good also in the heat over the trailer, especially in this Texas heat, you can crank up the A/C Keep an eye on them and they wouldn't suffer from the heat unless you have an air-conditioned trailer.
We also discussed this week that we might think of getting a mini van just for this purpose when we thought we'd have to take in our newborn cria to the vet earlier this week, but all is well and we didn't have to. (we also thought if we needed to, we'd use the camper). :c)
Good luck & Congrats,
