RE: [AlpacaTalk] eye problem
Hi list,
Atropine is used to lessen pressure in the eye and to lessen discomfort while the corneal ulceration or tear heals---however, if you use atropine, you should keep the animal restricted to low light conditions. Antibiotic alone is not always enough to allow the best conditions for healing.
This is a matter for the vet that prescribed it---and when this is not healing as well as you would like---that should be a return vet visit—or at least a further conversation with the treating vet is in order.
Allison---who has had to treat a lot of eye injuries over the years under vet supervision and “knows the drill”---but is not a vet!

Isn't atropine to dilate the iris? If that's what you're giving him, I'd definitely stop that, but give the antibiotic one if you feel it's helping.

Anyone here have any suggestions for what has become a chronic eye problem?
I treated this boy earlier this summer for well over a month for a
scratched eyeball - with atropine and tobramycin prescribed by the vet.
She said it should clear up in a few days.....not. He had much weeping
and discharge from that eye. After about a week to 10 days it finally
started looking a bit better; weeping less. I would stop the drops and
within a few days he would be squinting again and I would restart the
drops for another week. Finally after about a month to 6 wks it
appeared to be all better.....no squinting, no weeping. Now a couple
of months later he is holding that same eye partially closed most of the
time. This time there is no weeping/running. I did the drops again
for about a week, but have stopped. The eye looks healthy to me and I
just didn't feel like the drops were the right way to go so I have left
him alone. He doesn't hold it half closed all the time. But still
something is just not right. Maybe just sensitive to the bright sun?
Tho he does stay in the shade most of the day it is still bright out
there. But for a month or two after the last bout he was not squinting
this eye, and it was just as bright outside as it is now.
Thanks! Janice
