[AlpacaTalk] What works to get rid of misquitoes?
I was reading the post about fly problems, but what about mosquitoes? We don't have any standing water, pour the alpaca water buckets out daily, but the mosquitoes are massing on us and the animals. Poor Cammie looks at me and we can count at least 45 mosquitoes on just her face alone. They are so thick in my yard, day in and day out that we humans find it difficult to be back there with the animals. We have to wear long sleeved shirts and pants to keep from burning alive with their bites. Have no idea how it's effecting the alpacas and rabbits. Our exposed hands, and faces are massive welts of bites.
I was going to build a few bat houses to hang on the garage and house, but have no idea where to get the bats to eat the mosquitoes.
Our area is usually very dry, have to water twice a day to keep things green, but have rivers and ponds several blocks away. I can't do anything about other peoples rivers and ponds, so any suggestion to help my yard out would be greatly appreciated!
As for flies, I just bought one of those plastic compost bins and was given some red wigglers. We have plans on composting both the rabbit and alpaca poo that the red wigglers will make into great black gold for us and sell along with our fiber at our local farmer's market. I was told that should also keep fly problems from developing.
