RE: [AlpacaTalk] Bottle Feeding A New Cria

She got two injections but am unsure what they were.  One was antibiotic, I think. The othr may have been vitamin ……… I am weighing her cria daily to make sure she isn’t going downhill. If we don’t see a gain by today we will take whatever action is necessary.  Cria is active and nursing but I have been unable to tell how much she is getting.  I keep hoping for a milky face/lips after nursing.    Baby got an A,D.E vitamin shot, I think.

Mom is getting all the hay –orchard grass and alfalfa – that she can eat……no herb supplements but I intend to have them on hand for future births.

Did your vet give you anything to help moms milk come in??  There are drugs that you use in the first 12 hours on mom then after that you can get Dom Perodome to give mom everyday to stimulate the milk.If you know a female is not a good milker you can use
herbs for a few weeks before due date and while nursing.Offer the cria a bottle if she refuses it you can figure she is not hungry. If she keeps loosing I would take action soon. I remember an article in Alpaca Magazine way back when "the cria that nursed it's self to death." Basically  the mom did not have enough milk and the owners just assumed she had enough milk and it died. Always,T
