Re: [AlpacaTalk] Bottle Feeding A New Cria

Did your vet give you anything to help moms milk come in??  There are drugs that you use in the first 12 hours on mom then after that you can get Dom Perodome to give mom everyday to stimulate the milk.If you know a female is not a good milker you can use
herbs for a few weeks before due date and while nursing.Offer the cria a bottle if she refuses it you can figure she is not hungry. If she keeps loosing I would take action soon. I remember an article in Alpaca Magazine way back when "the cria that nursed it's self to death." Basically  the mom did not have enough milk and the owners just assumed she had enough milk and it died. Always,T

This was based on her consuming 4-6 oz at each feeding.  She actually only had one bottle and she consumed 4-6 oz then.  We have not had to bottle feed since the initial bottle and mom's milk is there, now.  I just worry she isnt't gaining fast enough.  I am trying to avoid the supplemental bottles so mom will establish plenty for her.

Once the cria is stable going 4-6 hrs at night is fine.BUT a cria that is only taking 2oz's every 2 hours could get very wiped out not having any "sugar" or even die.I know for a fact that crias that need a snack at night will hum and nudge at mom and she will get up and feed.I have even seen moms get a cria up on a cold night and get them to nurse.Just saying there are so many variables you have to evaluate at ever step and it is not the same from one tme to the next. Always,T
