Re: [AlpacaTalk] Recent AOBA activities

Don't get me wrong, Jennifer.  I'm not advocating for a second group (as far as I'm concerned, I have one: Suri Network, which - for suri breeders - is what I think a national organization should be!).  I think,  however, that AOBA is stuck in its own mud and in nearly 10 years I haven't seen anyone who's been able to push it in the right direction to get it moving again.  I don't expect it, or any organization, to be able to satisfy all members.  Nobody can do that. But an organization that only seems to be able to satisfy a small minority of its membership doesn't seem to me to be a very stable organization that will always be open to challenge from a newcomer.

Judith,
my words are born of experience. In every other instance I know of (several) where a second group was formed no good came. All that was accomplished was further fracture and strife.

Take the vision out further: A new organization would have to compete for shows and membership and credibility. That competition will do nothing but continue to create strife and trouble.

AOBA is not unique in the world of volunteer bods and organizations.  Far from it.

What we can do is demand transparency (which seems to be the issue in this case, several candidates don't want to disclose their industry dealings) and hold the BOD to the by-laws.

Jennifer, I appreciate the sentiment. However, this organization is a lot like some road projects i could name. It's been under repair for nearly as long as I've been in the business (nearly 10 years).  I think we need a new road crew.

Fracturing never repairs.
What this will take is a considered effort to fix from within.

NEW ALPACA ORGANIZATION !
I heard this while attending a show last month.  There is a group of people, or breeders, starting a new organization to replace AOBA. Just a rumor ?  I am sure someone out there knows about this.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I have been less than impressed with the way AOBA has ben run for several years now.

Indeed, we had some questionable things going on in a local affiliate, so much so that 3/5ths of the board resigned, then another 5th who was a new board member and actually the one asking questions resigned in another month or so. Most of the members have not renewed their membership. The new board does not meet the requirements of the org's bylaws.

It is really sad that at a time we need AOBA and ARI to pull together more than ever we still seem to have problems.
I know it is very hard to have people with different opinions and different personalities work together but they should think of the members and put their own feelings aside.
I don't know what caused this mess but election  was so good and smooth last time.  Why change what worked before?  No need to reinvent the wheel. The map and groundwork was already established.
This is the reason I don't volunteer for leadership and committees.  I like  many do not have the tolerance for it.

I wouldn't say worse. I would say remaining the same.
AOBA simply cannot get out of it's own way.

Letter to all AOBA Board of Director Candidates and Members,

The AOBA Nominating Committee and the AOBA Inspector of Elections have resigned, effective Friday, March 5, from their respective positions in the 2010 AOBA election process. As with all volunteers we thank them for their time, effort and the diligence with which they conducted their duties.

The Board has a responsibility to ensure that the provisions of the By-Laws are followed and that the governance of the organization occurs within that framework. To that end we are consulting with legal counsel to determine the steps required to enable the annual election to be accomplished in the required manner and time frame.

As we develop and execute the necessary procedures over the next week, we will ensure that all candidates and members are fully informed as things unfold.

We regret this delay, and we acknowledge our responsibility to the members of AOBA (and the AOBA By-Laws) to make sure the election moves forward in accordance with our By-Laws. We remain committed to completing this process quickly and keeping you informed.

For, and on behalf, of the Board

Not only this latest shocking event, but do you remember last year when AOBA board members were resigning every time you turned around? And letting Connia Alexander go, then letting Betty Brock go. I also heard they let Amy Morrison go!
