Brad, much as I'm no big proponent of AOBA, AOBA is the least of the expenses of alpaca showing. Alpaca breeders, being initially large, well-resourced farms, are accustomed to quite lavish show environments, with a "free" check-in pizza (or whatever), electrical supply for fans and such, fancy dinners and entertainment, yada yada yada. This means large, elaborate facilities with all the amenities; it means big fancy ribbons, etc. Have you ever noticed that no AOBA-certified show (that I'm aware of, anyway) uses the local Motel 6 as its host hotel? There's a reason for that. Shows are meant to please the wealthy, not to accommodate the small breeder with limited resources. If you want to reduce show costs, you need to speak with show organizers, not AOBA. Tell them you're happy with an outdoor tent show (like the one you attended a year or so ago in Cuba). Tell them you don't need a 24" ribbon. Tell them don't bother with a Saturday night dinner and fashion show (you're too tired by then to enjoy it anyway). Letl them know that cost control is more important than image.

The politics of AOBA are mirrored in ALSA and visa versa. Both are equal
in all of that. Afraid there is no avoiding it!

*Actually they are not mirrored at all. The politics maybe but the price
tag not quite. I can take 6 animals to an alsa show and show them in
halter/walking fleece/obstacle course and take a 2 oz fiber sample and a
bagged fleece for less than 3 animals to an aoba show for just halter.
That is not mirrored. I don't care about the politics behind the scenes.
If I can't afford to go to the show nothing else matters!
I do agree it would be nice if a new entity came around that was for
alpacas only and separate from AOBA. Only a show entity designed for
quality shows on a budget!
