Re: [AlpacaTalk] Progestrone for pregnancy testing
We used to progesterone test. I can think of two girls in particular, same year, and same vet visit actually, that were both false positives. One results was very high, and the other was a borderline value. Neither girl turned out to be pregnant.
We have had a few girls in the past who have submitted to males whether they were pregnant or not, but the rest of them will spit like crazy, or at least run like their life was on the line, if they are pregnant during behavior testing. Occasionally, we will have a female who will spit when she's NOT pregnant, but those are the ones who are either not at the receptive phase of the follicle wave, or will have some other issue like retained CL or some other problem.
Around these parts, I understand progesterone is as expensive as ultrasounding, so for the girls who don't spit test reliably, we'd probably do U/S over progesterone, for example for a paid breeding or a girl who was sold.
