Also, I would think that DE is awfully abrasive to be putting into your carpet. Sandy grit is one thing and awfully destructive to carpet, but DE is more like little microscopic knives. They can really destroy carpeting fibers! I'd be very cautious about doing this unless I was prepared to replace the carpet sooner than normal.

You can use animal/food grade to sprinkle, but it is more pricy.  The animal grade is edible and can assist in controlling the internal parasites in your animals.  The "swimming pool filter" type or the non-food grade just should not be ingested…but is fine for pest management sprinkling.
