RE: [AlpacaTalk] DE

You can use animal/food grade to sprinkle, but it is more pricy.  The animal grade is edible and can assist in controlling the internal parasites in your animals.  The “swimming pool filter” type or the non-food grade just should not be ingested…but is fine for pest management sprinkling.

Did you know there are different grades of DE?  One is animal grade, and one other is for putting down as pest control.  They are not interchangeable.  I needed some for a major flea infestation left for me by some trash 'renters' that I kicked out.  The feed store tried to sell me the feed grade and told me it would work for the pests.  I did know that was not the case, so went to another store. There might be a third grade too.

Thank you for the wonderful information. I would like to get my animals off of the chemical pesticides as much as possible and this seems like the best alternative. It also sounds like a it will be easier for me since my partner is a truck driver and has to make special arrangements to be in at worming time. This way they will be wormed on a daily basis instead on just once a month.
