Hi Jim, I only have been told about two types.  Food grade and the type they use for swimming pools.  The pool grade is considered poisionious to living things.    The food grade DE WILL  kill internal and external pests.  It works very well on ants, bugs, snails, fleas, lice etc.   I use it a lot.  I would not use the pool grade as I don't want my animals (dog, cats, alpacas etc)  being exposed to pool grade DE. It works by drying them out.   Use a bit on your hands and you will see just how effective it is.
