Re: [AlpacaTalk] Intestinal parasite control
This is all we use. We are in California and do not have issues with moist damp climates. They have DE free choice. I put it in 3 section goat feeders. The three sections are DE, minerals and kelp. I sprinkle about 1/2 cup of their pellets in each DE, minerals and kelp and mix it up. For new alpacas that are not used to the DE I just put the pellets on top of the mixtures until they learn what it is. They eat what they want. Sometimes they do not touch it for weeks and sometimes (like now) we have to fill it daily. I sprinkle DE on the bean piles and I put in in their dust rolling spots. Currently we have had a lot of rain and have used bedding of straw. I sprinkle that with DE also. It keep the lice and other critters gone. We have had clean fecals for 4 years using DE. We will occasionally get one or two that will have parasites with an illness or some thing else going on and in those cases we will use Safeguard or Panacur as needed. Fortunately we have had only 4 cases we have need to intervene with the chemical wormers. Our herd is over 100 alpacas and it seems to work for us.
