Re: [AlpacaTalk] What's new?
No, it won't hurt the immune system. That isn't the problem with Naxel and Exenel. What the vets say is that they wipe out the intestinal flora, so that makes digestion difficult. I have found that to be true with most antiboiotics, though. Since crias are not born with their guts pre-populated, it isn't an issue with newborns.
Getting ready for more rain Tuesday, have to put the horses in the barn and make sure the alpaca tarps are all well-fastened. Got a new male multi Suri from a friend a few days ago and really like him but my Huacaya herdsire doesn't, so they have to remain separated for all eternity, I guess. That means building more fences in the mud, what fun. One cria expected any day now from a mom with a uterine infection history so have to give Excenel shots. Does anyone know if that will hurt the cria's immune system if I give them to mom before it (SHE, think positive) is 24 hours old? I don't think we have much choice, I don't want an infection at any rate. I'm going to be giving 5cc Excenel SQ daily for 10 days.SUSAN OLSONAlpaca LocoRiverside, CA
