Laura, unlike the alpacas, you can brush the llama once he's settled in.  You can even use shine sprays on him to keep him from getting matted and tangled.  Hope he works out for you!  Our female llama Sammy is priceless, I sleep so much better knowing she's on guard.  She's a fantastic guard and would kill a stray dog or coyote if it threatened "her herd".
