Thanks for the advice Janice. I don't know what it is about rain and especially real hard rain. When my girls where killed by dogs, it was storming bad here and that's why we couldn't here my american bulldog barking until it stopped raining. She is in a pen outside of the pasture, but she can see in the pasture and lets us know if anything is amiss. I guess dogs, foxes and coyotes don't care about storms.

Congrats on the new baby!!
I also got 2 pyr puppies. I was told not to leave them alone with the
livestock until they were 2 yrs old! I had them in a pen inside the
pasture and only let them out while I was out there. The pacas, esp the
new mom, had a really hard time adjusting and was quite aggressive
towards them. The 6mo baby however was fascinated and was soon kissing
snouts with both puppies. I saw no hints of agrression whatsoever
towards the ducks, chix, guineas, or alpacas. I started leaving them
unattended for short periods of time while I was elsewhere doing other
things but would check on them frequently. They have been here maybe 6
wks now (seems like they've always been here). About 2 wks ago I
started seeing the fox walking the fence line in broad daylight, so at
the tender age of 3 1/2 mos I decided the pups were going to work as I
figured the fowl were in certain danger from the fox and only uncertain
danger from the pups. It was a gamble I had to take, so the pups have
been out ever since. A few nights ago I heard them barking, ok nothing
new and the barking didn't sound particularly aggressive. It was
pouring rain and I tried to ignore it but something just didn't sound
right so eventually I pulled on my raincoat, grabbed an umbrella and
flashlight and went out to check. They were both barking towards the
blueberry field and all alpacas were standing at alert staring in that
direction as well. OK, something's up. Sure enough I catch the glint
of eyes in my flashlight. I hold it there while dd goes to get the
german sheperd, as soon as he runs out the eyes disappear. The pups
stopped barking and all has been quiet since. They now stay out all the
time. They of course would not be able to protect anything at their
age, but boy was I pleased with them the other night.
I am surrounded by predators this year for some reason. Coyotes and fox
daily/nightly which I haven't seen/heard around here except only on rare
occasions and something making the most god awful screaming noises at
night. It sounds like a woman shrieking. I've been told it's a bobcat
when I describe the sound, but I've also been told that bobcats "are not
that aggressive" and "don't make noise". Whatever it is it makes my
blood run cold; the shrieking is simply blood curdling and will wake me
up from a sound sleep.
Good luck finding an adult. Have you checked the rescue groups? Joined
the Pyr list? Just after I spent a fortune on my 2 pups I joined and
immediately saw several rescues that needed a home. The working lgd
list also has many rescuers on it and can help you find one.
