[AlpacaTalk] Guard Llama
We brought home an eleven year old gelded llama yesterday. He is brown and IMMENSE. (compared to the alpacas) reminds me of a moose, which is his second nickname.
We have nicknamed him, “The Bouncer”, since his primary function will be to guard and play referee with our unruly boys. I received some great advice about llamas. They are pretty docile but their size intimidates predators AND the very boys they are protecting. I have been told they will take on a leadership role and position themselves between boys who are fighting. I’ll let you know if we witness this behavior.
He has a very funky haircut, though. We are leaving him alone to adjust to his new surroundings and herdmates, but I am so tempted to go out there and groom him!
We have two Pyrs in with our girls. They have been in with alpacas since they were four weeks old, at the breeders. I got them at 7 months….they were huge, but still puppies. Fortunately, their size intimidates other animals. They are 14 months old now and still play with each other like puppies. When separated and then reunited, they run and body slam each other. They are brother and sister and every time I think one is dominant over the other, it reverses! I love these dogs, they are so loving to us, but just one of the herd in the alpacas eyes. One day I looked out to see our cria, Elle, laying with her head on our female Pyr, Lulu. It was precious.
Now that we have the llama, the dogs will stay together with the girls and the llama will stay with the boys. He is used to dogs, but I don’t want to risk the dogs being hurt if he decides he doesn’t like them. All of our alpacas are used to dogs.
