RE: [AlpacaTalk] What are you feeding?

Hi Chrys, My animals are on dry lot too. I feed 2nd cutting orchard grass and Southern States Alpaca feed from Agway. My alpacas eat around a flake of hay each daily. I also have out Golden blend minerals in a bin for them to eat free choice. I feed my girls a measured cup (8 ounces) of feed twice a day and the boys 1 cup once a day. Some people do not use the feed for the boys. I do because I don't have fresh pasture for them and they do well. If I feel someone is getting fat, I cut down on the feed. For my skinnys I add alfalfa hay to the orchard grass and if they're really thin I also add 1 cup of Calf Manna to their feed. I also feed the skinny ones apart from aggressive eaters to make sure they get their share. It is important for you to put your hands on the animals frequently, run your hand along the spine so you can judge the weight. I also use a scale and weigh my animals monthly. You cannot judge by looks alone due to the fiber which can be misleading. I live in Pa. so my weather is similar to yours. Hope this helps. Flossie

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] What are you feeding?

Recently, I asked for advise from someone regarding a female alpaca that I have that is very thin and a comment was made about the feed that I provide to my alpacas as a supplement.

I started my farm this year and just brought my alpacas home in February. I kept the alpacas on the same feed that the previous owner had them on. I have the herd on a wormer protocol recommended by my vet. I do not have pasture grass for my alpaca to graze on yet. The fields that I have must be wiped out and seeded with the appropriate grass, which I am in the process of doing, but that doesn't help the alpaca much. I will be doing fecal testing this week to be sure it is not a parasite issue with this female, but I am testing the entire herd.

What do you feed your alpacas and why did you choose that particular feed?

Thanks,
Chrys Volk
