Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Odd behaviour

Janice, check out the  Premier 1 fencing catalog (you can do most of this online, I think).  They have very good descriptions of how voltage works, and how to plan fencing for different uses.  Premier 1 is one of my most trusted sources, because they give you pros and cons of everything, and make no pretense that any one product is "the best for everything."

<<< Janice - turn your hotwire voltage up - our dogs shreak like they are
being killed if they even touch ours, I think it would stop a mountain
lion. >>>

Susan, mine is not adjustable. do you know what your voltage is? I
have already changed the charger 3x. Started with a constant current
one - didn't know, it didn't say on the box. Once I figured out that is
what it was I took it back. Got a pulsing one which everything I have
read tells me is safer as it gives the animal a chance to release and
escape. It was 1000 volts. Wasn't phasing the pyr puppies at all.
Took it back. Got a 2000 volt one. That didn't have a huge deterrent
effect on the puppies, but they did seem more reluctant to jump on the
chix wire around their pen, tho they didn't totally stop. Then when I
saw my german shepard run right thru the extension the other night going
after the coyote, then come back thru it, trip over the bottom wire,
back up and retry several times until he could figure out how to go
between the wires - it was dark and he couldn't see the wire, without so
much as ever making a yelp, I knew it would no more stop a coyote than a
regular wire would :-(.
I think the next unit up is 5000 volts and much more expensive.
Can you tell me what gauge wire you are using? I'm told that can make a
difference as well. I am using 14 gauge and sure as the dickens do NOT
want to rewire the whole place. I have spent the past 2 months dealing
with this and need to move on to other emergencies awaiting my attention.

Also wanted to let you know that my Allie girl is back to acting totally
normal. Thanks to all who inquired about her. Have no idea what was
going on but sure am thankful to see her acting like her old self
again. The coyote got a cat about 3 or 4 nights ago and hasn't been
back since, guess he got his belly full, but we are now down one cat
:-(. I was just coming in from night check up around 10:30 and heard
it. It was awful. And one of my cats never came back home, so I can
only assume. Allie started going willingly back to the front pasture at
night after that night. Perhaps she senses the danger. Don't know how
often a coyote has to eat, but I expect he will be back soon :-(. It is
making me crazy.

Were you able to arrange a transport? I don't know how many of my posts
you got or didn't get, but I gather you finally got the one I was trying
to send with the guys contact info? But still don't know which way
worked as far as getting the info to you. Don't know why the posts
wouldn't just fly anyway. There was some glitch, but I don't know what
it was; I must have sent it 6 different ways! Anyway, hope if he wasn't
able to help he was able to hook you with someone who was.

Warmly, Janice
