Re: [AlpacaTalk] Bottle baby

Heather:
I haven't checked the probios that are in yogurt compared to those in probios paste, but I just use vanilla yogurt in each bottle. It's way simple...which is about the only way I like things! I think the taste is also pretty appealing to the crias. It's also pretty cheap compared to some of the probios I've gotten and I can snack on it too! Anyway, we started off with way too firm poo. I haven't caught her poo-ing lately, but.....there are a few beans on her leg fiber, so she's going. She's not the most active cria I've had, but she's active enough, so I'm sure all the plumbing stuff works or she'd be down in pain. As for yours not urinating as much, perhaps the probios are allowing the fluid to do what it's supposed to do in the gut rather than being used up in the kidneys and going more straight through the gut....yep, I'm a believer in probios for all animals....I've discovered that I even like vanilla yogurt which previously wasn't as much a favorite!

Off to the store. I'm out of milk and have a feeding due -- good old cow's milk is working for us, so I'll stick with it...easy to get on the 4th of July! Have a happy 4th!

I'm happy with 1/2 lb per day. My last two crias from this dam have had average weight gains of 1/4 to 1/3 lb pr day. This new little girl was having copious urine and very little poop on the milk replacer I'm feeding her, and the poop has been very soft, liquid in fact. I have a very hard time getting the Probios paste in her mouth, and having her swallow it, so I put a very large click, probably 5 ml, into one of her bottles yesterday and shook it up very well. Today, she made lots of poop, I mean lots! And although it's not perfect beans yet, it is very much firmer, about the consistency of peanut butter. Not sticky, though. :) And not as much urine, I'm not sure what the connection is, if any. I'll keep a close eye on that.

Probios might help your cria, too.

Have a great 4th, everyone!

I've tried to run the math, but not sure Evans is accurate in all cases....stand to reason that they're all different. My little girl is up to 21 lbs at 2 weeks having started at 14.8, so I'm not complaining. Like you, I've had them gaining more like an average of 3/4 - 1 lb a day, so this is slow! She's active enough and starting to graze, so hope all of her 'juices' and mechanics kick in soon and she utilizes the solid food. The other cria this year was eating pellets by 2 weeks of age and doubled her birth weight at 1 month....Not sure we're going to do that well with this one, but at least she's looking good. Anyway, it was interesting that I had to be gone last Saturday and missed a couple of feedings. I tried to add them in, but couldn't..........and the next day she'd gained 1 lb! So, I keep flirting with the idea of keeping her at the 6 or so oz and going to every 4 hours...maybe Mom just needs to be pushed more.........I just don't want this apple cart upset right now since she's still so young and from what I can tell, looking nicely fibered. Besides, i thought her knees were on backwards when she was born and she has some vey nice straight legs now....and her poor ears were plastered to head and inside out -- and I just left them alone and they're fine now too...and she was 358 days gestation.......I'm sure she could have gone at least another week, but she came when she came and takes a baby bottle with gusto -- so again, no complaining!

Good luck with your little one.....too bad yours is rejecting Mom........at least we've got that much going for us. A maiden mother who loves her baby and works well with her, just not enough milk.....bummer!

Susan
