[AlpacaTalk] Re: not BEW - - wry face or twist
I have a male like that here. Born here, *spectacular fleece and conformation* was going to be my first ever show paca back in 2001- got him entered in a string of shows... he was only one year of age when he got a tick in his ear that caused 1/2 of his face to be paralyzed. He almost died before we got it all cleared away, he never grew to full size due to the trauma and he has a permanent 'twist' to one side of his face due to the muscles atrophying.
He has to be monitored a little closer than everyone else in his 'golden years' now as he still gets the occasional pocket of food in his cheek on that side that needs to be massaged in for him to chew.
If anyone didn't know better, I guess they could think he had wry face.
I also had a male here I bought when he was just about a year old. Perfectly straight conformation, straight nose, great bite, my first breeding male.
He ran full force into a fencepost and about 3 months later he looked like a cartoon character with his nose bent to one side. He broke his nose (also cracked his teeth right off) then it grew back crooked. Again, could have been mistaken for wry face.
Just goes to prove you just don't know the whole story sometimes! :))
(and yes, we did have some REALLY CRAPPY luck in those first years of breeding! But also healthy happy crias from both of these males)

It quite possibly might be an alignment issue due to an ear tick when he was younger. If the animal was entered with a vet certification stating so this would explain why the judge placed the animal. Research it a bit more by talking to the owner. I've seen the nerve damage ear ticks can cause to the face and it does indeed look like wry face. It also can cause ear damage that looks like that cartilage deformity that is highly heritable as well.
