RE: [AlpacaTalk] Dog Attack, any advice on Suri alpacas as replacements?

Hi Heather..

Well, a good (phenotypically correct) huacaya from suris back in the
pedigree that someone wants to sell me, I'll gladly take. Their loss from
ignorance can become our gain. What they fail to comprehend is that a
huacaya from two suris MUST be a genetically pure huacaya and can NEVER
throw a suri, because in order to get it you must have inherited only the
recessive "s" gene in the following equation: Ss x Ss = ss. ( where S is
for suri, the dominant gene, and s is for huacaya, the recessive gene.)

. And, in our rather tightly bred national herd, where we supposedly must
not line breed, here is a new line, unrelated to the other huacayas..so a
real boon to the average alpaca farmer seeking genetic diversity. Of
course, that is based on it being a phenotypically excellent animal in the
first place.

However, with Suris.it is not the same. Because that is the dominant gene
of the pair...for every suri to suri breeding where the suris involved are
heterozygous.(carry one S and one s gene) they may look like SURIS, but they
are really "F-1" animals.heterozygous animals. So their offspring from 4
matings will in theory be 3 animals that appear suri of which one is a pure
suri (homozygous suri (Ss x Ss = SS) while the other two are going to be Ss
x Ss = Ss and that 4th or last one is your huacaya (Ss x Ss = ss)

So the problem is those two animals in the middle, they are called "F2's"
and they appear suri but have a 1 in 4 chance of throwing a huacaya if bred
to another one like them, another heterozygous suri.

This is the full set of information which in theory explains our suri
genetics. Of course, in reality there' are always a few deviations from the
theories, and there is also a margin of error. We have reports of animals
which have intermediate fleeces between suri and huacaya, the so called
"chili" animals with their crimpy suri locks or their silky, shiny twisted
huacaya locks that are incorrect for either type.but are, nonetheless, most
interesting to our hand spinners!

The suri/huacaya mix is not an easy thing. There is stigma on both
sides of the issue.

I have been told in an offer for a trade, that a 1st place ribbon
winner at a level 5 show, huacaya, was not something a particular
breeder wanted in their breeding program. Specifically, the suri 4
generations back in the pedigree. This female is extremely dense,
fine good bone density, huge topknot... But no dice. So, suri in a
huacaya pedigree is really not well accepted any more than huacaya
offspring in a suri line.
