Thanks MaryJane, I was in the midst of writing you for advice on hand
shearing and learning to shear my own to save that expensive bill. But
then I realized that shearing is also when they get their feet trimmed
and get a good looking over. I don't have a chute (something I have
been wanting to have built for the longest time), this guy brings a huge
thick rubber pad and we lay them down to shear so I can examine under
armspits and other places I never get to see for any
ticks/parasites/skin issues, etc.

The next subject I was going to tackle is tooth trimming. Definitely
needs to be done....not just fighting teeth, but what in the world do
you do about those loooong bottom teeth. If I can get instruction in
how it is done, I think this guy will be willing to help me do it. I
asked him last year if he knew how and he said he had never trimmed
teeth before. But I think he will attempt if I can tell him how and
what to use.

So for now I guess I will continue to have to depend on him to do my
shearing, but definitely something I would like to learn to do
myself......after I have a chute.

Thanks! Janice.....sufficiently chastized and scared to go separate my
little stud muffin. My gelding was done young and never bred so he is
fine. And BTW, found a home for that aggressive rooster yesterday....he
is gone. I saw him going after the stud and I realized horrified that
he could truly hurt Merry, as I went running to chase him off my boy.
Someone happened to be here when it happened and heard me say, for the
hundredth time "that rooster has got to go". He had a friend wanting a
rooster for his 4 hens, so the big boy got loaded up and gone last night
:-).
