RE: [AlpacaTalk] nutritional needs

Hi Kathy,

The nutritional needs depend on what is in the forage and browse available
in your area. You should look for the general requirements in Dr. Norm
Evan's Field Manual.but it will differ depending on what is locally
available in the mineral department.

You need to know, for instance, how much selenium is in your local
area.what is in the water mineral wise and how much protein you are getting
in your pasture or hay. Having your hay tested is a good way to go. Check
with your Ag Agent, if you have one, for further info on your own area. A
local Ag University or Vet school is a big help.

Mostly, alpacas----if not pregnant, need between 12 and 14% protein in their
hay; they need a mineral supplement made up for their and--- they need some
pellets if it is cold, if they are pregnant, nursing, or breeding..just to
'supplement' their pasture/hay ration. Pellets should be only a very small
part of their diet. The diet should be mostly 2d cut timothy/orchard grass
or fresh pasture if you can find it. No Clover.makes them foam. Some kinds
of rye are also not so hot.gives staggers.

You don't say where you are located..but the local chapter of AOBA for your
area may have meetings you can get to..and at those meetings there should
be other alpaca breeders/shepherds from your area who can help you get this
basic info. If you have purchased alpacas, the farm which sold them to you
should also have that information and should "mentor" you until you have a
comfort level with their routine care.

If you sign with a signature block that gives us information on how to
contact you and where you are located; we can help you better. Meanwhile,
if no one close bye is available, please feel free to call us and we'll try
to help you with whatever info we can find for your area.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] nutritional needs

I am hoping someone could give me a list of nutritional needs and supplement
(feed and vitamins) Alpaca's should have and how much. Or a web site that
has a descriptive list of these. Thank you, Kathy
