Re: [AlpacaTalk] nutritional needs
There a lot of people who spend a whole lot of money on alpaca feed and
supplements. And there are people who feed only hay and a free choice
mineral such as Stillwater 104 or Cache la Poudre. If you do feed a
mineral/salt supplement, make sure to buy one that is specifically
formulated for alpacas.
My mom had a custom feed made after our regular pellet declined in
quality so much that we had herd-wide increases in micron of between 4
and 11 microns compared to the previous year. Our feed is based on
alfalfa pellets, it contains the "RDA" of all minerals and vitamins,
and essential amino acids as outlined in Norm Evans' book. It's
formulated for our area and the hay we feed. There is no corn, no
miller's dried grains product, no soybean hulls, in short, there are no
products that you don't really know what they are in our feed.
We do top-dress the pregnant and lactating females' rations with
stabilized rice bran to provide extra fat in their diet for milk
production and to keep them in condition since milk production really
does tax their fat reserves.
That's all we do. And we have very healthy animals, and excellent
fleeces to show for it.
