Re: [AlpacaTalk] aborted twins - 96 days gestation
hi Heather - your Scirocco sounds wonderful - Arbutus, Ridge Scirocco is a son of Acero Marka's Rockamundo
we have one of Scirocco's daughters now, a lovely little yearling - i am hoping the new cria will be a girl also (of course)
Our black dam lost her twins at 10 months, and she was a mess - had to have the vet in - she didn't seem to miss them at first but i notice now she is nasty to the other crias. She was always very maternal to all the crias before the miscarriage, she was the one i would put in with new moms as she was so helpful. So i'm assuming she is feeling the loss and grieving for her babies, -
Do you have a nice warm "maternity ward" stall that you can house Fall crias in? A friend puts a heat light in the barn for her crias born late in the year and they do fine. I don't have that option so i really don't want Fall babies - I have coats ready for them, but i find myself feeling really anxious about the births, and the weather etc etc etc
At least it is dry today, i am off to do the poop-scooping-

Hi Wendy,
Thanks so much. For me, though, it's 3 months of lost production and
having to worry about a fall birth next year. Or, wait till spring and
lose a year's production. I'm more concerned about the dam. However,
she seems to be perfectly fine. I losing the pregnancy this early
doesn't appear to upset them at all, unlike with full or near term
stillbirths.
My Scirocco is born and bred on my farm, he a son of the rose grey
champion Avatar of Delphi Alpacas in Colorado. I know there's an Avatar
in Canada, too!
