[AlpacaTalk] Re: Update on Eye Injury
<<Yes, our vets are really wonderful. In fact, ours was out last year
delivering two dystocias in one night, at around midnight. Wait, maybe
it was one each, two nights in a row. One was a torsion, the other
was... Oh I can't remember. Cervix not dilated maybe? We had another
one of those 3 years ago, different dam. But both were maidens. Anyway,
he is always available, and happy to help.>>
Wow, you've had quite a night! Hope everyone is doing ok now? And you
got some sleep? I guess I'll have to go look up dystocias now as this is
the 2nd email today mentioning that....and I don't know what it means!
Now, see I always was told that alpacas had their babies early in the
day, so that the babies would be/could be up and running with the pack
by nightfall. So anytime I have been expecting a baby, if it hasn't
come by noon or so, I go on my merry way thinking we are good until the
next morning. It sounds as tho I have been naively misled!? Perhaps
only the problem deliveries happen in the middle of the night?
<<Maybe you could check with the closest university with a vet school and
see if they have a program for sending grads to small communities, like
they do for human doctors! I think University of Tennessee has a vet
school.

Good idea! Athens - Univ of GA has a vet school, but they are on the
other side of the state from me.
I don't know how far Auburn Univ (AL) is from me, but it can't be too
far, and I know they have a very highly respected camelid dept in their
vet school. Dr Pugh used to come out to my friend's large llama farm
(about an hour from me) to do on site training with his vet students. I
used to occ go to the lectures he would do at her farm. I consulted
with them by phone many years ago when my stud boy Charlie Brown was
going down with what I suspected was m-worm. We were able to pull him
thru without my having to take him there, tho that is what they would
have preferred. Even tho at that time I had a car capable of hauling
him in, he was too lame to load.
But they are not in my state, and I am sure when there is a program like
that it would be for the state that provided the education. That is how
many students in the healing arts pay back their student loans. I did
the same. Maybe I'll call Athens vet school....if I can ever find the #
and ask if they have such a program and to please send one in this
direction!
Warmly, Janice in GA
