RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: show prep

Two questions regarding this topic.

I have a beautiful black gelding who was attacked by some dogs in September,
which resulted in 2 of his legs being shorn to the skin to treat the wounds.
Would this affect his placement in a halter class? Could we just explain to
the judge what happened? Or, would it be better to wait until next year to
show him, when his leg fleece should be more uniform?

There is a show this coming spring that is going to have a walking fleece
class for alpacas.is there anything I would do differently to show an alpaca
in this class? I would assume that it is similar to llamas- you should try
to avoid messing up the fleece's natural characteristics (especially the
crimp in huacayas).

Thanks for the input. Emaly

All we do is pick off as much vegetable matter as possible, and
whatever else, dung tags, you name it. It's acceptable to wash legs and
feet to get mud off, but blankets should be left as natural as
possible. You may groom or trim topknots, too, but any other alteration
or "blocking" is prohibited. So alpacas really require a lot less prep
for shows than other animals, although it doesn't seem that way to me
when we finally get there! :)

I love show, too! They're so much fun and I always learn a lot every
time I go whether I am showing or not.

Best of luck!
Heather
