[AlpacaTalk] ARS Update
I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving. We had the whole
family here for dinner. With 14 children, three son-in-laws, four
grandchildren, and my parents that was a houseful. Our alpaca had a
great Thanksgiving eating all of the apple peels from the pies.
Over the past few days we have had a number of reports, and sadly one
death. I hope each understand that every death is a great loss, not
just to the owner, but to each of us. I feel strongly that we must
recognize the importance of working together for the betterment of the
national and international herd. One of our members wrote, "Up
until
now the alpaca community has been somewhat of a closed society."
If this is true I do not know, but I do know that it is not/cannot be in
the future of the alpaca community. One farm's problems, one
farm's success is like a pebble dropped into the center of a pond.
With time the ripples, however small, will reach to the farthest
edges
This is why we each need to work together to be the
solution.
I would like to thank each of your for helping make this, small, dream
come true
Here are the current numbers:
Total herd size reported: 4881
Total number reported infected: 2520
Total number of deaths reported: 53 from owners and 6+ from
vets/universities
Reports of infections: 38 States
Reports of deaths: 21 States
Reporting farms: 162
One email I received yesterday said, "Only one alpaca that was at
the show came down with the snots. I had one cria, two between 2 and 5
years and two older animals, both over ten that were treated with
antibiotics. The two older alpacas had difficulty breathing. One
responded to antibiotics after three days, the other died from severe
respiratory distress after six days of treatment with two kinds of
antibiotics. Of course, he was a very well known breeding male I had
purchased half ownership to use for my spring breeding program. It was a
great loss."
The numbers of reports and deaths are still on the decline. For those
that have contacted me worrying about their alpacas worry a little less,
and practice good viral precautions and herd management.
