[AlpacaTalk] Alpaca Upper Respiratory Virus
Hi Everyone,
Having gotten tired of calling this insidious virus `The Snots'
I have started calling it `Alpaca Upper Respiratory Virus',
AURV. I'm sure the experts will eventually give us a name, but
until them AURV is better than the snotsÂ….
Here is the address for the latest numbers and map. Please be aware
that there are new cases still coming in. This is not over, and the
virus is still going strong. We are also still getting reports of
deaths. However, in order to add the information to the report we need
to have the details from individual farms. The information is 100%
confidential, and your name, farm/ranch name, and identifying
information will not be included.
Quoting Allison E. Moss-Fritch
"We are all at risk while any one of us is at risk. Given the
numbers---over 1000 reports going back at least as far as June
2007---this is not something that is just happening at the farms which
have currently been reporting.
Many other farms are suffering through the throes of this alpaca
disease, which though often mild, is also capable of killing your
animals in a matter of hours. Nothing is to be gained by delay in
reporting. Everything may be gained."
