Re: Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: New to the list and Market question

Hi Shere -- Is the whole area available for the alps, or does your house/garage/lawn, etc. take up part of it? You need to compute how much space you actually have for their use. You can do lots of creative things with just a couple of acres by using good, protective perimeter fencing and then lots of interior subdividing with portable fencing (for example, things like Electronet which works a charm and can be moved in minutes).

Lots also depends on what the pastures contain in the way of nutrition. Obviously the more grass and other appropriate nutrition is available and the less weeds there are, the more the alps will literally get out of it. You may have to supplement with hay, although most people seem to do so anyway (I don't offer any supplemental hay during grazing season, but I think many, if not most, folks do). Depending where you're located in NYS, the land can support great grazing or terrific rocks (sometimes both - the alps have to choose). If your land has decent soil structure, diversity in forage with lots of beneficial microbes, etc., and can be easily subdivided, you can support the number of alpacas you're considering easily.

In terms of the overall market, I agree that it's been fairly consistent over time. I think the fiber market is being addressed far better today than in the past, which will open up opportunities to help subsidize an operation through the fleece harvest, which is all to the good. There are certainly many more markets available, more processors available, and more public awareness of the benefits of alpaca fleece than ever before, in any event.
