[AlpacaTalk] Re: New to the list and Market question
I have been in the business for five years and have, to date, sold
one male. Mainly the reason behind this is that we've had almost
nothing but bad luck! All boys, deaths and pregnancies that
disappear after 10 months.
I personally feel that the market has not changed. This mainly is
seen in the pricing structure of alpacas. Just go to Alpaca Nation
and you will see that the average prices are still where they were
over five years ago. This tells me that it's a stable economy for
alpacas.
If you plan well and breed the best that you can you should have no
problem getting on the selling side of the alpaca business.
On the other side, the fiber, there is plenty out there that you can
get from other farms for next to nothing if you'd like to consider
starting your own fiber business. Because of my bad luck I have
moved over this year more to the fiber side of the business, which I
didn't plan on being in for another couple of years.
We love owning alpacas and wouldn't do it any other way (other than
NOT agisting as we had no control over our animals). These wonderful
gentle creatures (usually! ;o}) are a delight to own and I think it's
great that we have two alternatives in making money with them.
