I agree... Most other livestock ARE that way... But what about other
livestock such as Marino sheep and Mohair goats... Something that has it's
most important value OTHER than meat and hide?... Just curious, but do they
also refer to non breeding stock by just the common name? I really have no
idea.

And it's always struck me as peculiar that we struggle to find terms
to describe the "exception" alpaca as a non-breeder/ pet quality/
fiber gelding or whatever.

Breeders of most other livestock would call the vast majority of the
population "alpacas" and the "exception" would be the select few who
are specifically chosen and called breed stock. I think we've got
that backwards and our difficulties in trying to put a name to the few
"let's-not-breed-this-one exceptions" reflects it.
